About Ricasoli

The history of Italy cannot be told without including the prominent contributions of the Ricasoli family, who have produced wine since 1141.  Ricasoli is documented as the oldest winery in Italy and the fourth oldest family business in the world.  

Baron Bettino Ricasoli, who was not only twice the prime minister of Italy, but after 30 years of experimentation and documentation, developed the original formula for the Chianti wine that became the standard for the region. The heart of the Ricasoli wine production comes from the Brolio castello, a magnificent castle located in the commune of Gaiole in Chianti.  

Baron Francesco Ricasoli has been at the helm of the winery since 1993.  Today, the wines are a reflection of the family’s nine hundred year dedication to quality winemaking and innovation at the Brolio estate.

Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Ottavia Giorgi di Vistarino.  Ottavia was full of passion and pride as we discussed her wines and the history of her family’s estate.    As you all may know I am a lover of French Burgundy wine and have tasted and offered Grand Cru and Premier Cru Burgundy in our pre sell for several years now. 

The pinot noir from Conte Vistarino rivals some of the best Grand Crus I’ve tasted.

In 1850, Count Augusto Giorgi di Vistarino was the first person to plant Pinot Noir in the Oltrepò, by importing the shoots directly from France.  Since then the family has been carrying out a constant work aimed at enhancing the noble vine while respecting the territory and its vocation.

The Vistarino dynasty is today represented by Ottavia Giorgi di Vistarino.  Ottavia carries an important legacy on her shoulders with the pride of someone who knows where to go, aware of the goodness of her ideas: to lead the family business while respecting its tradition, but putting character, future and personality into it.

Costa del Nero Pinot Nero 2021 :

Deep ruby red color, intense aroma of red fruit.  Wine is aged partly in steel tanks and in used barrels until bottled 10 months after harvested.

Cru Tavernetto Pinot Nero 2017 :

A cru of only 2 hectares, only 75 cases imported to the US.
A lovely waft of minerally tar and graphite draws you into the glass of this lively red, which showcases supple tannins and flavors of black and red cherry fruit, rose hip, marjoram and anise. WS 92 points

Cru Bertone Pinot Nero 2017 :

Also a Cru of 2 hectares , only 75 cases imported to US.
Savory hints of herbal olive and smoke play off ripe black raspberry, licorice twist and spiced orange peel in this fragrant red.WS 92 points

Cru Pernice Pinot Nero 2015 :

Cru of 3.5 hectares .
Deep ruby red, complex aromas of violets and red fruit, roasted coffee and cocoa.
