For our December tasting I would like to introduce you to wines that are some of my personal favorites. They are not only some of my favorite producers, but vintages that I feel are drinking at there best! I hope you take sometime out of this busy season and enjoy them with us.

From Northern Parts

Barolo , Michele Chiarlo 2012 Piemonte
100% Nebbiolo grapes.

Since 1956, the Piedmont winemaker Michele Chiarlo has foreshadowed the continuing quest for quality on the part of so many of Italy’s conscientious producers. From the beginning, the Chiarlo family winery has made superior Barberas and high quality Barolos that today are consistently among the most renowned expressions of these wines.

Tortoniano is named for the tortonian-era soils in which the vines are planted, which contain a high percentage of magnesium and manganese. Grape clusters are thinned and harvested up to 15 days later than usual so that the fruit attains higher concentration. Temperatures are strictly controlled during vinification and the wine is aged for two years in large oak casks and one year in bottle before release.

Chardonnay, Ferrari Trentino
100% Chardonnay grapes.

You cannot have a holiday without a little sparkling wine! Ferrari was voted best Sparkling winery of Europe! Beating out many French Champagne houses.

This year we will also be tasting Ferrari’s Rose Sparkling.

Rosso di Montalcino, Col d’ Orcia Toscany
100% Sangiovese grapes.

The Rosso di Montalcino DOC was established in 1984 as a means of giving Brunello di Montalcino producers the flexibility to continue the tradition of long aging of the region’s flagship wine. Rosso di Montalcino is made from 100% Sangiovese grown in the same delineated region as Brunello di Montalcino. However, the wine is required to spend only six months aging in oak and 1 year total aging before release. This allows Brunello producers to make an earlier releasing wine that can generate cash flow while their Brunello di Montalcino age for their complete duration.

When the Cinzano family arrived in 1973, most of the wine bottled in Montalcino was Brunello. In 1976, three years later, Col d’Orcia already represented more than half the production of “Rosso” in Montalcino. Thanks to Col d’Orcia’s efforts in 1983, Rosso di Montalcino became a D.O.C. wine by Decree of the Italian President of the Republic.

Super Tuscan, Poggio Verrano Dromos 2007 Toscana
Cabernet Sauvignon,Merlot grapes, Alicante, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc.

Founded in 2000, Poggio Verrano, with calcium-rich clay soils on the Tuscan coast, is one of Maremma’s most interesting wine estates. This blended red wine delivers ripe aromas of black cherry and blackberry backed by chocolate, rum cake and spice. It exhibits a tight, polished finish.

92 Points Wine Enthusiast

Taurasi, Fuedi di San Gregorio Campania – 100% Aglianico

Deep ruby red. Intense bouquet of wild cherries, raspberries, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and anise. Full-bodied and well-balanced with flavors of plum, black cherry and licorice.

Critical Acclaim

JS93
James Suckling
A pleasantly chewy red with black pepper and blueberry character. Licorice, minerals and black pepper notes as well. Full body, well-structured and a beautifully austere finish. Better in 2015 when it’s a little softer but outstanding quality already.
