Free Wine Tasting 12-05

Tucked in between the Orobic and Retic Alps just south of the Italian-Swiss border, you’ll find the terraced vineyards of ARPEPE. At the helm of this storied estate, located in the Grumello subzone of Valtellina in Lombardy, is the fifth generation of the Pelizzatti Perego family.

The Colutta – ‘Bandut’ wine estate, so called from the name of an ancient fund of the property, purchased by Antonio Colutta in the early twentieth century, is now run by Giorgio Colutta, third generation. It produces quality wines in the vineyards of Buttrio, Manzano and Rosazzo, all included in the prestigious “Parco della vine e del vino” of the Colli Orientali del Friuli.

Based in the village of Vho on the outskirts of Tortona, or Derthona as the Romans called it, La Colombera is a third generation, 22 ha property planted most notably with the indigenous white wine grape Timorasso

REDS
We will be tasting 2 wines from the ARPEPE Estate

Rosso di Valtellina
100% Nebbiolo grapes
Very approachable with the softness of Langhe Nebbiolo but the structure and depth of La Morra Barolo. Bright cherry, eucalyptus, floral with a distinct minerality. The grapes are fermented with native yeasts and aged for short periods in old chestnut oak and cement.

Valtellina Superiore Riserva “Grumello”
100% Nebbiolo grapes
In the Via del Buon Consiglio 4, where Sondrio meets Montagna in Valtellina, at the foot of the Grumello, the vines seem to swallow up the underground cellar. Here the Nebbiolo from the Alps goes back into the womb of the mountain that generated it. At 370 metres above sea level, the vineyard extends towards the city, over the Ca’ Bianca district, where the terraces have dry-stone walls in excess of 7 metres.Long maceration times in wooden vats, even over 100 days if necessary, in large barrels for up to 60 months, or even more – in other words, for the right waiting time, in silence, in the dark, in the Burgundy bottle.A grippy red, loaded with minerally iron, saline and smoke notes, this is fresh and tightly meshed, with flavors of roasted plum and fig fruit, cigar box and ground white pepper that start softly but expand on the palate, ringing out on finish.

WHITE
We will be tasting  1 wine from the La Colombera Winery

Timorasso Derthona
100% Timorasso Grapes
Nose opens with lemon, beeswax, stone fruits, and some wet stones. The palate is moderate with a good texture suggesting beeswax and a flavor set nectarines and lemon bound together with minerality to finish

We will be tasting 1 wine from the Colutta Winery:

Ribolla Gialla Brut
100% Ribolla Gialla  Grapes
Elegant bouquet, floral, yeast and crusty bread. Delicate, aromatic, round flavour. This wine is obtained from the vinification of 100% Ribolla Gialla grapes
